Will Police Protect You?

I’ve posted enough on police lately — I post this story not so much as a criticism of police (although it seems a solid chance they could have done better) but to address the myth of “When you need them to help you then you won’t be complaining about cops dude”

In reality they ARE NOT required to help you and they often do not. This was decided by the Supreme Court in a case where a man was stabbed while officers watched — the court ruled that they don’t have to help.

That is a fact.

Another fact is that in most cases ….especially the hypothetical “Well when an armed invader comes into your home you’ll be calling police then dude” scenario.

Actually no — in the case of an armed invader either you kill or incapacitate him, he kills or incapacitates you or it’s resolved some other way like someone running…..the police almost NEVER play into it….they are simply there to come and file a report AFTER the fact.

This isn’t a criticism of cops either — it’s just physics and math — they simply cannot be fast enough to make it to the crime scene until after the fact – it’s almost never possible.

If you want to protect yourself you are deluded if you think police will do that for you– you are better off getting a firearm and some training.

Think about it: in your entire life how many times can you honestly say that you or someone you directly know was SAVED in mid crime by a cop? How often have you honestly heard of a rape being stopped in process by a cop? If you’ve been a victim of a crime statistical chances are no one saved you other than perhaps yourself.

This also isn’t a criticism of cops — even if they mean well and want to help they simply can’t be there. The odds of a crime happening when they see it are very slight. It’s about personal responsibility. Almost no cop can stop a rape, ever….but a can of mace or a 9mm can stop it the majority of the time.

The other part of the related argument is that the existence of cops reduces crime — high crime areas have the most cops so this is shown not to be the case. Even wealthy, educated Boston has FOUR TIMES the cops and police budget as poorer and less educated El Paso yet Boston still has more crime in every single category tracked by the FBI.

If we want to be honest about the function if police these days it’s much less to save or protect people and more often to generate revenue for the State and for profit prisons. Most crime they work on overall is non-violent drug crime and they do very little to stop violent crime against citizens.

A violent city who cut it’s police force in half and increased it’s number of citizen gun owners by a large amount would probably be far safer than before.
