WASHINGTON, June 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who recently returned from Pakistan, will examine the humanitarian situation on the ground, the urgent need for greater international assistance and how Pakistan reflects broader refugee and displacement trends around the world at a National Press Club Newsmakers press conference at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, in the Library Room, 13th floor, National Press Building, 529 14th St., N.W., Washington, DC.

At the Newsmaker, Guterres will release the UNHCR’s 2009 Global Report. Every day, thousands of people in northwest Pakistan are registered as displaced. As the conflict between government forces and militants in the area continues, the number of people who have been forced to flee their homes increases. More than two million people have now been displaced.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (www.unhcr.org) provides protection and assistance to the world’s refugees, asylum seekers, refugees returning home, stateless people and a growing number of the millions of people displaced within their own countries.
